Pondok Kasih Foundation Papua Care: Igniting Hope in a Forgotten Land
Behind the dense forests, beautiful mountains, and world-class tourist destinations, Papua holds the stories of children who dream big but are hindered by limitations. Access to proper education remains a serious challenge. Many fifth and sixth graders are not yet fluent in reading and writing. This gap creates an academic divide that makes it difficult for them to compete nationally. According to UNICEF data, more than 620,000 school-age children in Papua have not received adequate education, and the region is short of more than 20,000 elementary school teachers.
Responding to these challenges, the Pondok Kasih Zona Papua Foundation has come forward with a strong commitment through the National Program for the Enlightenment of the Nation’s Children (PAB), which is a non-formal education program focused on improving intelligence, competence, and character in a planned and integrated manner. It is hoped that this program can help address educational challenges by involving the government and the private sector. With love and a grand vision, the foundation has opened 32 reading houses and operates Smart Cars and Smart Boats that reach children in remote areas and coastal regions. The team of volunteers not only teaches, but also shapes character and instills life values. Despite facing difficult terrain, a lack of facilities, and limited funds, their enthusiasm for educating the young generation of Papua never wanes. This program is not just about providing books and lessons, but also about creating space for children to dream. On quiet beaches, under the shade of trees, or at small, secluded docks, they learn to read, write, count, draw, and understand Indonesian and English characters and languages properly. Their eyes sparkle with genuine enthusiasm as they embrace knowledge.
Smart Cars serve as mobile libraries, bringing books and stationery to remote villages. Smart Boats travel along rivers and seas, reaching hard-to-reach coastal areas. Reading Houses provide a safe place to build literacy and imagination. There, books are not just objects, but windows to a wider world. With the support of parents, the government, and the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), Pondok Kasih continues to move forward, in line with the vision of Indonesia Emas 2045.
From a small Reading House behind the hill, great leaders will emerge to build their own land. Because education is not just about knowledge, but about hope. Papua is not forgotten; it is being revived. Let us realize this hope together through your donations. (MH).
